The Child of Mercy Children's Centre, located in Likoni (Mombasa, Kenya), is an institution dedicated to providing protection, education and a safe environment to children in vulnerable situations.
The centre currently has a capacity for 28 children and is maintained exclusively through voluntary donations from individuals and private sponsors.
Although the centre collaborates with local authorities and receives children referred by government agencies, it does not receive institutional funding or regular financial support from the government.
This project proposes a comprehensive intervention based on four fundamental pillars:
1. Acquisition of the land and legal consolidation of the centre.
2. Expansion of infrastructure to house up to 150 children.
3. Implementation of sustainable energy, water and food production systems.
4. Creation of educational and job opportunities for young people when they turn 18.
The ultimate goal is to transform the orphanage into a sustainable model of child protection and community development.

This 5-year project aims to transform the centre into a fully sustainable model of child protection and community development, expanding its capacity from 28 to 150 children. The four fundamental pillars are:
1. Legal acquisition of the land (€135,000) to guarantee permanent institutional security.
2. Major infrastructure expansion, including new bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, dining hall, library, study rooms, infirmary, and recreational areas.
3. Implementation of self-sufficiency systems: solar energy, rainwater harvesting with filtration, hydroponics, aquaponics, poultry farming, and an agricultural nursery for food production and income generation.
4. Vocational training programs (sustainable agriculture, solar maintenance, IT, woodworking, sewing, and general maintenance) to prepare young people for independent adult life.
Once completed, the centre will significantly reduce operating costs through renewable energy and on-site food production, generate revenue from surplus sales, and create employment opportunities for the youth it supports.
Over a 10-year horizon, the expanded and sustainable model is projected to directly benefit approximately 850 children with safe housing, nutrition, and education, while providing school support and vocational training to over 1,300 children and young people in the wider community.
This project aligns perfectly with the Quantum Legacy Foundation’s mission of creating long-term resilience and self-sufficiency rather than temporary aid. By combining child protection with education, sustainable agriculture, and economic empowerment, Child of Mercy will become a replicable model of dignified, sustainable care for most vulnerable children.
