Mission Description

Why?

These horses are a living part of Kaapsehoop's heritage and economy. They draw visitors, define the village's identity, and represent one of the last remaining examples of free-roaming horses in the region. Once lost, they cannot be replaced, relocated, or recreated.

How?

A small equipped team provides daily/weekly monitoring in high-risk areas, deterring poaching and reckless behaviour while identifying injuries or illness early. When a horse is at risk, the project enables immediate veterinary response-preventing minor issues from becoming fatal. Simple practical, effective protection-on the ground, every day.

Impact:

The result is a protected horse population, a preserved village heritage, and a sustainable tourism asset that continues to benefit the Kaapsehoop community.

The wild horses of Kaapsehoop are a rare and living symbol of the village's history, freedom, and natural beauty. They are endangered, because of poaching, and vehicle accidents when walking across the main road into the forests. They roam the misty grasslands above the escarpment, and these horses have become inseparable from Kaapsehoop's identity, shaping its character and drawing visitors from around the world. They are not just animals; they are part of the soul of the village. Over the years, these horses have adapted to the harsh high-veld environment and live in delicate balance with the surrounding conservancy, and they need our help. Their presence supports Eco-tourism, strengthens conservation awareness, and reinforces Kaapsehoop's reputation as a place where nature and heritage coexist. Without them, the village would lose one of its most defining and irreplaceable features.

Protecting the endangered, Kaapsehoop wild horses, requires targeted, purpose-built infrastructure that enables consistent monitoring and rapid response. As the horses roam freely across open terrain and public roads, early detection and timely intervention are essential to prevent avoidable injury and loss.
